FARMER FIELD SCHOOL (FFS)

Farmer Field School was started in Meekery village of Ooty taluk in August 2008. The major vegetable cultivated in this region is Potato. Moreover the major disease prevailing is late blight. The crop loss through late blight in potato is around 15-20%. Hence management of late blight in Potato was selected for Farmer Field School.

Two village meetings were conducted to explain about FFS concept. Discussion was carried out with the Director of Potato Research Station, Palada regarding the FFS programme at Meekery village. Two collaborators namely Mr. Kamaraj and Mr. Iyyappan allotted their land for the trail. Thirty farmers including the collaborators were selected. They were divided into six sub groups. The ballet test was conducted to measure the knowledge of the farmers on Late blight in potato. The ballet sheet was prepared with 10 basic questions and it was tested. Around 60 percent was knowing about the late blight disease in Potato. Dithane M-45,Redomil were given to the collaborators as inputs.

Ten sessions were made including village meeting to the village. The member of the farmers field school participated from the land preparation to harvesting. Two fields were selected for the trail. The total area of one treatment is 20 cents. The layout of the trial plot is given below.

T 1 : Dithane M-45 spray
